Prairie Expedition American Elm
(Ulmus Americana 'Lewis & Clark' )
Height: 50–70 feet
Spread: 40–60 feet
USDA Hardiness Zone: 2bThe Prairie Expedition American Elm is a hardy selection of the American Elm from North Dakota that is resistant to Dutch Elm disease. This beautiful stately tree is a feature around the country in forests, yards and parks.
As an extremely hardy tree, it grows quickly and reaches massive sizes, making it a perfect shade tree for homes and backyards.
-
Bur Oak
(Quercus macrocarpa)
Height: 50–80 feet
Spread: 50–80 feet
USDA Hardiness Zone: 2bThe Bur Oak is the hardiest oak around and a great selection for Montana and surrounding areas. This massive tree has a wide spreading growth habit and strong roots that can punch down into hard, compacted soil.
The root strength makes the Bur Oak ideal for planting on boulevards, because it will not heave or lift surrounding concrete or structures.
It is extremely long lived (300+ years in some places), with distinctive dark furrowed bark making it a beautiful feature tree wherever it is planted.
-
Canada Red Chokecherry
(Prunus virginiana 'Canada Red')
Height: 15–25 feet
Spread: 10–20 feet
USDA Hardiness Zone: 3aThe Chokecherry is one of the hardiest plants we carry and this variety is the most beautiful to boot. It’s an extremely fast growing and pretty plant with dark smooth bark and leaves that emerge green before turning a dark maroon red.
The beautiful white flowers are borne on clusters that provide a great visual pop and wonderful spring fragrance that change into the edible but slightly bitter chokecherries in the fall.
We can also order/carry shrub forms and native green leaf varieties of chokecherries.
-
Cockspur Hawthorn
(Crataegus crus-galli)
Height: 15–25 feet
Spread: 15–25 feet
USDA Hardiness Zone: 3aThis tough and compact tree has stunning white springtime blooms that are great for pollinators and turn into beautiful red berries in the fall.
This hawthorn variety has also been selected to be thornless, so pruning and training off the tree are easy and pain-free.
The Cockspiur has a short but broad growth habit, making it an ideal selection for small yard or other space restrictive planting spaces.
We can also order/carry other Hawthorn varieties such as Russian, Toba, etc.
-
Narrowleaf Cottonwood
(Populus angustifolia)
Height: 55–65 feet
Spread: 25–35 feet
USDA Hardiness Zone: 3aThe Narrowleaf Cottonwood is a fast growing native that is well adapted to extreme weather and marginal soils.
An excellent choice for shade, these cottonwoods are cloned from male cottonwood trees which makes them “cotton-less” so no need to worry about allergies or mess.
A good choice for those who may be a little impatient and want a mature tree as soon as possible.
-
Starlite Flowering Crabapple
(Malus starlite)
Height: 15–25 feet
Spread: 10–15 feet
USDA Hardiness Zone: 3aThe Starlite Crabapple is an improved variety of the very popular and widespread Spring Snow ornamental crabapple.
Starlite really do live up to their name and are covered in dazzling prolific white blooms in the spring with sparse, diminutive fruit making this ornamental crabapple a little/no mess tree.
One of the most cold and drought hardy flowering crabapples available, this variety is an ideal fit for the cold and harsh Rocky Mountain front.
-
Northern Acclaim Honeylocust
(Gleditsia triacanthos)
Height: 25–35 feet
Spread: 15–25 feet
USDA Hardiness Zone: 3aThe Northern Acclaim is a selection of a North American native and is common sight across the West, for good reason.
Honeylocust are one of the most drought hardy and adaptable trees in our region. With an attractive broad branching habit and stunning golden fall color the honeylocust is hard not to appreciate.
The naturally deer-resistant tree can be found in both urban and rural settings and is tolerant of a variety of soil types.
